Which also means that the inevitable reveal post in October or November will lead to nothing but vitriol. I’d dig a tC, but other people may not.

What do you like about the tC?

The hatchback is nice, it’s a Toyota underneath so it should run forever, and I think it’d be a great first car. Plus, I need to get better at driving stick, and I feel like this would be a good car to get experience on.

The tC is a tough sell when you consider the FR-S. Same basic concept, but RWD with more power and better looks.

Drove my second RWD vehicle (an ‘05 Ranger) today. General thoughts: I can see why most of the general public doesn’t give a shit about whether something is RWD or FWD.

And I had my eye on a TSX, but my wallet disagreed. Maybe this year!

I’ve always liked the TC, both the orig and that 2nd gen. It’s basically a Celica.

Twenty more horsepower, several grand more, and the fact that as a first car, I don’t care if it’s FWD or RWD.

The tC is a pretty solid car. Not that great gas mileage though, especially considering its just a 4cyl.

A quick look on cargurus.com is showing me that 2014 and up tCs are going for roughly $10,000 at the lowest and FR-S’s are going for $13,000, $12,000 if you looks at ones over 60,000 miles. tC’s definitely get cheaper when you look at older ones.I actually like it tC’s. I remember a yellow one with a black roof and wheels that I saw on campus all the time in college.

That’s a fair point. Granted, it’s a 2.5 litre that was also used in the RAV4, so crummy fuel economy is not entirely unexpected.

Yeah, outside of actual racing, drive wheels don’t matter as much as certain people around these parts want you to think. And you have cars like the Civic Type R that are blurring the lines even on the track.

Down here 1st gen TSXs are getting quite affordable, and 2nd gens are starting to creep below $10k. Not sure what prices are like up there.

Exactly. The right car with RWD is heaven. I drive a Mustang and the fiancee drives a Pontiac G6 GTP coupe (which had a respectable 240hp). It’s night and day. Pushing through a corner is better than pulling through one any day of the week. It all depends on the use though. If you live in an urban area, it really doesn’t make a difference.

I’m thinking about bringing over a Prelude Type S in 2022. Imagine the torque vectoring system of the ST twins with the handling characteristics of a 90s Honda. The Type SH we got here was a watered-down version of it.

Very much so. ITR coupes are about twice as much as the Prelude. ITR sedans (yes, they’re a thing!) are a little cheaper but still a big difference. Due to its engine size and width the Prelude is more expensive to own in Japan, so there has never been as much demand for them. A good Type S runs about half the price of an ITR or EK9 in the same condition.

http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/HONDA/PRELUDE/700040241230171003001/index.html

There’s also the theft factor of the ITR that the Prelude doesn’t have.

Not a bad choice. I would get one personally because I don’t want to go bad to an NA 4 cylinder unless it’s an old school Honda. Something very small and under 2400lbs.

However it’s still a cool little car. Maybe also check out a Veloster. Hyundai’s 5 year/60 thousand mile bumper to bumper warrently is a good deal. And non turbo Velosters aren’t too expensive.

This is oppo, but oppo isn’t real life. We need opponauts to make good practical desicions about car ownership so they can keep coming back here. Its not gonna do us all any good if we’re unemployed because the W12 salvage title phaeton we brought can only take us to work and back reliably 20% of the time.

Great choice for a first car. Reasonably quick but not too fast, manual available, reasonably small, reasonably light, somewhat practical, affordable, and loooks decent.

I wouldn’t completely turn your back on RWD, I thought it was overblown myself but I will say, I tend to have more fun driving a RWD car. Someone suggested 135i below as half a joke, but I’d actually say the BMW 128i cars have proven to be pretty reliable(no turbo and they Tended to be less well optioned) and they aren’t all that expensive(you can get a car with under 100k miles for under $8,000 I think). Also, their frumpy looks make them a little divisive.
